MISAFF 2023 Jury
An incredible jury has been selected from the film and entertainment industry this year. Prizes will include BEST FIRST FEATURE AWARD, BEST DIRECTOR, BEST SHORT, BEST CANADIAN SHORT, BEST ACTOR, and BEST SCREENPLAY.
Awards
The MISAFF jury will be announcing awards in several categories including Best first feature, best documentary, best short and best actor.
SABEEN MAHMUD AWARD OF COURAGE IN CINEMA
The Pakistani activist Sabeen Mahmud was killed in 2015 by two gunmen for hosting a talk at her gallery T2F in Karachi. With the permission of Sabeen's mother Mahenaz Mahmud, MISAFF15 decided to dedicate an award in her memory. The winner is announced at our awards ceremony on the closing night of the film festival by the MISAFF jury. Past recipients include Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Sarmad Khoosat and Zana Shammi.
Raymond Ablack - Actor
Raymond Ablack is a Canadian actor and comedian. He began his career in the early 2000s as a child actor on stage, performing as Young Simba in The Lion King at the Princess of Wales Theatre. He is recently seen in the hit series Ginny & Georgia.
Anand Ramayya - Producer
Combining a passion for inclusive stories and original voices, KarmaFilm founder Anand Ramayya has built an impressive, twenty-year track record as a BIPOC and equity seeking producer with over 80 hours of content notably WAPOS BAY & DONKEYHEAD receiving over 40awards including five Geminis (two Canada Awards for excellence in diversity), a Canadian Screen Award (six nominations), and a Kidscreen Award.
Sarah Moustakim - Distributor
Sarah is a film producer from Morocco living in Montreal. Recently she joined the distribution company h264 as head of digital sales and is now curious to discover new cinematographies.
Zaarin Bushra - Actor
Zaarin Bushra is an accomplished actor and filmmaker based in Toronto. She has received critical acclaim for her work in the film industry, including the Outstanding Actress in a Feature Film Award at Reelworld Film Festival for her performance in Andrew Chung's White Elephant (2020).
Kelly Balon - Producer
Kelly Balon is a Toronto based producer known DONKEYHEAD, winner of four 2021 MISAFF awards, and the upcoming comedy series, OUR BIG PUNJABI FAMILY.
Hannah Cheesman - Actor/ Writer
Hannah is an actress-turned-writer/director based in Toronto and LA. She is a TIFF Emerging Canadian Filmmaker, whose work in features, shorts, TV, web series and commercials has shown at TIFF, Cannes, Vimeo Staff Pick, and Palm Springs, to name a few. Most recently, Hannah sold her half hour dark comedy, Badger, to Apple TV+ She is also working alongside Lulu Wang & Dani Melia of Local Time (The Farewell, Expats) to produce her auteur feature debut, Succor, based on her short film of the same name.
Sergeo Kirby - Producer
Sergeo Kirby is an award-winning producer of documentary and fiction films based in Montreal. He works with Indigenous and BIPOC folks to uplift their stories.
Fakhir Sheikh - Content Creator
Humour enthusiast , creatively bounded and content creator , Fakhir Sheikh a.k.a “toronto.brownie” has done it all . Starting with TikTok during the pandemic years , he is now a social media influencer on Instagram bringing smiles to the south Asian community .Since a child , Fakhir has always been avid and passionate about South Asian movies and songs .
Eisha Marjara - Director/Writer
Montreal filmmaker Eisha Marjara first drew attention with her feature NFB docudrama Desperately Seeking Helen (2000) that established her as a groundbreaking filmmaker. The film received the Critic’s Choice Award at Locarno Film Festival and the Jury Prize at the München Dokumentarfilm Festival. It has been described as “one of the most auspicious film debuts on the Canadian scene.” Her film Venus won the Best Screenplay award at MISAFF.
Preeti Torul - Actor/Director/Writer
Preeti Torul is an actor, screenwriter, comedian and filmmaker represented by Grand
Wave Entertainment.
Preeti started out at The Second City Toronto in 2013 and was cast as a writer and
repertory player in the inaugural Bob Curry Fellowship in 2015. Since then, she has
performed stand-up across North America. Her first televised stand-up performance at
the 2019 Winnipeg Comedy Festival, is now streaming on CBC Gem.
Preeti’s on screen credits include ‘Bria Mack Gets A Life’ (New Metric Media/Crave),
’Note To Self' (CBC Comedy), 'Odd Squad' (PBS), ‘Nine Films About Technology' (FXX/
Hulu) and ‘Wedding Season’ (Netflix).
